Company Formation Questions

Common questions about registering and setting up a limited company in Ireland.

What is company formation?

Company formation is the legal process of incorporating a business as a limited company with the Companies Registration Office in Ireland. Once incorporated, the company becomes a separate legal entity from its shareholders and directors.

What information is needed to register an Irish company?

You will generally need a proposed company name, a description of the business activity, an Irish registered office address and details of the directors, company secretary, shareholders and beneficial owners. Identity and address verification may also be required.

How long does Irish company formation take?

Processing time depends on the completeness of the application and the workload of the Companies Registration Office. We review the application before submission to reduce avoidable delays, but CRO approval times cannot be guaranteed.

Does every Irish company need a company secretary?

Yes. Every Irish company must have a company secretary. A single-director LTD must appoint a separate person or eligible corporate body as secretary because the sole director cannot also act as company secretary.

Does a company need an Irish-resident director?

Irish companies are generally required to have at least one director resident in the European Economic Area unless an applicable exemption is available, such as a valid Section 137 bond or a qualifying Section 140 certificate.

Is tax registration included?

Tax registration is included in the Standard, Advanced, Pro and Non-Resident packages shown on this page. The Basic package covers company incorporation only.
